Residential vs Datacenter Proxies: What a Checker Sees | ProxyJam

The usual version of this comparison is a price table: datacenter cheap and fast, residential expensive and slow, pick according to budget. That is true, and it is not the part that decides anything. What decides it is a lookup that any site can run in about a millisecond, and that many run on every request. Every block of addresses on the internet is announced by some network, and the public registry says which. A datacenter address resolves to a hosting company. A residential or ISP address resolves to a consumer broadband provider. That single field is what separates the two products, and it is the reason the price gap exists. So the question is not which is faster or cheaper. It is whether the site you are visiting looks the address up, and what it does when the answer comes back saying data centre.

The lookup

Every block of IP addresses on the internet is announced by some network, and every network has a number — an autonomous system number, an ASN. Which network announces which block is published, queryable, and free.

So when a request arrives, a site can ask: whose network is this? The answer comes back as an operator’s name, and from there a second question is trivial: what does that operator sell? A hosting company sells servers. A broadband carrier sells connections to households. A mobile operator sells phone plans.

This is not fingerprinting and it is not clever. It is a table lookup, and it is why the datacenter-versus-residential distinction exists at all. Everything else in the comparison is downstream of what that lookup returns.

What each category answers

A datacenter address answers with a hosting company. Honestly, permanently, and in a way the person renting it cannot change. For a target that treats automated traffic differently from human traffic, that is enough to decide, and no amount of care in how the request is sent alters the record.

A residential address answers with a consumer internet provider. The machine behind it is somebody’s home connection, so the request arrives from a domestic uplink with a domestic uplink’s speed, variance and habit of going away when someone reboots a router.

Both answers are true. The question is which one the target is going to be comfortable with.

The middle, which is where most buyers actually land

The two-option framing hides a third arrangement: hardware in a data centre, addresses registered to a consumer internet provider. The lookup returns a broadband company; the machine answers at server speed and stays up.

This is what our own product is, and it exists because the honest form of the comparison above is not a spectrum with a sensible midpoint. It is two separate properties — where the machine is and whose name is on the address — that happen to be bundled together in the two familiar categories and can be unbundled.

What the comparison usually gets wrong

Treating speed as the axis. A residential address is slower because a home connection is slower, not because the category is inherently slow. Move the machine to a data centre and keep the registration and the speed comes back.

Treating price as the axis. The price gap is a supply story. Hosting addresses are manufactured in bulk by companies that already own the racks; consumer addresses have to be sourced one household or one carrier agreement at a time. The gap reflects scarcity, and it will not close.

Assuming detection is a contest. For most refusals there is no contest. The target read a published record and applied a rule. Products sold on being undetectable are usually promising to win a fight that was never fought.

Ignoring shared history. A cheap shared datacenter address carries whatever its previous occupants did. That is often the real reason a “detected” address was refused, and it is fixed by paying for a dedicated one — which does nothing about the registration, and is still worth doing.

Choosing

Ask what the target is.

Systems you own, APIs with a key, internal infrastructure, load testing. Nobody is checking. Buy the cheapest thing that is fast and stable, which is a datacenter address, and preferably a dedicated one so you do not inherit anyone’s history.

Consumer-facing sites — retail, streaming, social, ticketing, advertising. Someone is checking, and the lookup will not go your way from a hosting range. You need a consumer registration, and then the second question is whether the address should hold still or rotate, which is its own comparison.

Anything with a login or a session. Consumer registration and a fixed address, both. Rotating residential fails here for a reason that has nothing to do with this article: the address moving mid-session is itself the signal.

Whatever you buy, check what you were sold. Look up the address, read back the operator’s name, and see whether it matches what the invoice implied. It takes one query, and it is the only part of this that is not a matter of opinion.

Quick answers

Are datacenter proxies always detected?

They are always identifiable, which is not the same thing. Whether a target acts on it depends on whether that target cares. A great many APIs and internal systems do not, and paying more than a hosting address costs there buys nothing.

Is residential always the safer choice?

It is the safer choice against consumer-facing targets, and an expensive irrelevance elsewhere. Safety is relative to who is checking; if nobody is, the premium is pure cost.

What about the middle option?

Can I tell what kind of address I have been sold?

Yes, and you should check rather than trust the invoice. Look up which network announces the address and what that operator sells. If a provider will not tell you whose network their addresses belong to before you pay, that is itself the answer.

Does any of this make traffic anonymous?

No. The address is one signal among several, and the ones further down the table above — behaviour, timing, volume, how the client presents itself — are the ones that catch people who got the address right. Nothing in this category is a cloak.
