Since 1 March 2022 Indonesia has used a national halal label issued by BPJPH, which invalidated the earlier logos. A product photo on an Indonesian listing may still show an older mark, which is worth checking against the current rules. How do halal deadlines differ by business size?

Mandatory halal certification in Indonesia is phased by business size and product type. Medium and large makers of food and beverages have been covered since October 2024, while a regulation of October 2026 moved the deadline for micro and small food businesses, and the start for imported food, to October 2028. A dated record of what Indonesian product pages showed through those steps helps when a question about a past listing comes up. Pages of large makers and of small sellers may therefore differ for the same kind of product while the transition runs.

Does halal change Indonesian product searches?

Does the word halal in a query change what ranks? Run the product name with it and without it from a fixed Indonesian address and compare the two result pages: whether the winners mention certification, and whether that shifts as the deadlines for each business size and category pass. How Indonesia's halal rules are phased

Which halal label is national?

BPJPH, the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency, issued a new national halal label that has been in effect since 1 March 2022 and that invalidated the earlier logos of both BPJPH and the Indonesian Ulema Council. Its shape recalls the gunungan of Javanese wayang. Product photos taken before that date show whichever logo the packaging carried at the time. BPJPH itself became a cabinet-level agency in November 2024, spun off from the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Which products had to certify first?

Under Government Regulation 42 of 2024, medium and large food and beverage businesses formed the first phase, from October 2024, and other categories were given later deadlines, the longest ones for medicines and some medical devices. The same regulation gave halal certificates issued by BPJPH permanent validity; a business must still report changes to its ingredients or its production process.

Why was the halal deadline moved?

Government Regulation 40 of 2026, enacted on 14 October 2026 and announced two days later, amends the 2024 rules. It moves the deadline for micro and small businesses making food, beverages and slaughter products to 17 October 2028, starts the obligation for imported food and beverages on 18 October 2028, and sets 17 October 2028 for cosmetics and several other categories. Obligations already in force for medium and large domestic food makers remain.
